I'm using just fluxbox (www.fluxbox.org), a window manager based on
blackbox, no gnome, no kde, no "desktop environment" whatsoever. it has
a very small memory footprint, it is very configurable in its look and
feel (there are dozens of very different looking themes, and they don't
slow down the wm, because they all use no pixmaps/bitmap graphics), you
can make keybindings for almost everything and it works with mythtv like
a charm.
for people using debian i recommend using the following apt sources,
they (almost) always contain an up-to-date version of fluxbox:
deb http://people.debian.org/~dopey/fluxbox ./
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~dopey/fluxbox ./
