 I'm still putting good money on my patch as being the right solution for
 this problem, iterating across an unlocked list that another thread is
 modifying never led to anything good.

 I'd love to work out why it breaks other things, but since I don't use
 mythtv for tv, I don't have anything that is ill effected. If someone
 could point me to something that I can get crashing/hanging/misbehaving
 without having to get a tunercard and the works, I'll stab at it again.
