Yes,  as I said above, I got master after an (arguably too early) 
upgrade of PPA 35.  But apparently master is not being built for 22.04, 
and going back to PPA 35 was frustated by the presence of packages 
labelled as v36.

Eventually I used synaptic to get a clearer idea of what was wrong, and 
now have fixes/35 apparently running well.   I'll probably stay with 
22.04 in the immediate future.
