Thanks, faginbagin!  I'll look into the easier way!  ...The scripts I've 
put together here will put up a message window (xmessage, gxmessage) so 
get semi-immediate attention of when a remote computer is off-line.  For 
things like smartmonitor detecting a bad sector not nearly that critical 
and an e-mail would be sufficient.
