Indeed matchparen is the culprit. I’ll spend some time with your link - thanks - I had not seen that one.

My issue was, I can disable matchparen then I get NOMATCHES.
I find a lighted match bracket helpful and not distracting. Trying to change 2 to 3 needs far too much careful looking — [2] 

Since (the combination counts) my backend is a headless Rysan (GMK - type NUC) I use nomachine to view the backend-machine if I need to (eg run mythfrontend on backend machine) and nomachine does not play nicely with some distros. Furthermore Debian can’t build my (Qt) logging stuff (I can’t remember detail). So choosing a distro is an big deal (I can’t believe, but it is so!)
