This is a general critique

Guys we are no longer living in the days of fortran and 12K of core so why are the error messages still from that era.

stuff like

 QString("Couldn't open input file, error #%1").arg(ret));

is akin to saying ‘something is wrong somewhere’

1/2 hour building mythtranscode with decent error messages (and qt make that so easy)
1 second to see the error
