the method of placing the file on your local web server is what i use
without a problem. it's possible the problem he's facing could be
redirection of the url which myth (at least version 30 and under) does
not support. i had to add patches to correct this.

if the streams are mpeg, you could also just install tvheadend, give
tvheadend the url list (m3u), and then get the tvheadend playlist and
use those url's in the m3u you give myth in setup, that will get you
around any redirection problems as the call to the tvheadend url has no
redirection.
