I just did the fresh install of RPi OS and then ran the latest 
pi-setup_mythtv_31.sh.  Rebooted, configured which backend to use, and I 
have a working frontend.

Not sure what all the talk is about using a "compositor" What I'm doing 
seems to be all you need.
