FWIW I recently had to buy all new hardware when the last of my old frontends died and I had to upgrade everything. I've found the Intel NUCs seem to do a good job, and even an old i3 is barely out of idle showing UK SD Freeview recordings. They seem to come up on eBay for around the £80-100 mark, so looking at around £100-120 by the time you've added a FLIRC for remote control. I've got 2 of them in use, and another waiting for a replacement fan - they are virtually silent, the fan generally only runs slowly.

My backend is an old (by current standards) HP Microserver.
