Just to update on this one: As long as I kept the problem HDHR on my
router instead of the switch it worked perfectly. In fact the
occasional failed recordings I've had for a while appear to be a thing
of the past.

Today I got a new switch...went with an 8-port Netgear GS308-100PAS.
That's now hooked up and both HDHRs are working perfectly connected to
it. So yea...switches can do some seemingly arbitrary stuff for sure.
