wasn't my problem it seems, but using -v playback has shown "...Pause to allow live tv catch up...." multiple times a second when i get the stuttering.

I'm playing around with the deinterlacers as they have caused various minor but annoying playback issues in the past. currently on vaapi2/hw-gl options as the hw-va methods always had pros & cons depending on what i'm watching.
