No, they're ignored. Although I don't see a reason why, other than it
reduces the chance of recursive scans (a symlink to it's parent dir).

0.28 is too old to get updates anyway.

Not that I'm aware of. Presumably you mean a slideshow of all images.
I think some of the Gallery API is still broken.
