This thread surprised me. I don't have much H.264 material, and what I
do have is from UK DVB-T2 recordings with data rates IIRC less than 3
GB/hr. I have a GT710 and a 2.6 GHz core2duo processor, both much less
potent than Richard's. I hadn't noticed the number-of-processors option
either; I have now set it to 2.

atop now shows individual cpu loads of less than 5% on playback of this
material. When I first installed the GT710 I reported a lack of
'solidity' in the picture during panning, but newer drivers from
rpmfusion and profiles in MythTV now give playback as good as I get from
UPnP or the firestick 4K 20181124 mythfrontend.

A quick google suggests that blurays might now deliver 100 GB for 2
hours. Perhaps that *is* what's causing the difficulty.
