I am sorry I don't recall the details but whatever I did was on Ubuntu 8.
But if your MB handles it, all the better.

There is also an option on my MB called cool'n'quiet that turns the CPU
clock down which also quiets things.  I have it turn up at 15% rather than
the default 95% as my system is either idle or working and when working I
want all the power devoted to the task.

The other thing I did was remove two case fans.  I think some of the fans
were actually fighting other fans.  It looks like the new cases have
thought this through better than my 10 year old one.
