My experience sounds just like what you mentioned about audio and video. 
It is not as good as an 6 year old Core i3 NUC on mythfrontend on the 
RP3 B+.

However, the whole experience is extremely good on Kodi.  In fact, I 
just downloaded the LibreELEC 8.25 and the picture is fantastic.

So IMHO the RP3 B+ is the right platform for remote FE.  Even with a 
case, PS, and microSD card, I spent only $63.  I just wish mythtv 
frontend was as good as Kodi with pvr-mythtv.
The Kodi interface is not intuitive and the wife will not be happy to be 
moved from mythtv-frontend.  But I'm not spending $180 for a Nivida 
Shield or $300 for another NUC.
