But the OP said he doesn't want the desktop running all the time - and having slept with a "server" in the bedroom I can agree with that !
And I also assume that the laptop isn't dedicated either.

So that comes back to the earlier suggestion of adding a third machine (perhaps a laptop grade of system for quietness) as a backend and just run a frontend on the other two boxes.
