[mythtv-users] Nvidia Shield Is the future of Mythtv Frontend

Well my Nvidia Shield arrive today and I got it setup. It’s one of the small one with the TV remote and the Game remote. I setup Prime Video and Sling TV just to make sure all the easy stuff worked.

I followed the Mythtv Android Wiki and got Mythfrontend installed using the setting for the Shield on the wiki. All of my recordings are OTA USA ATSC HDTV programs. Some channels are 720P and some are 1080i. All works great. This is far superior to my 3rd Gen Core i3 Ivy Bridge NUC or my RP3 B+.  It’s as good as my Core i7 desktop with a Nvidia GT710.  So I’ve found my solution.

One minor issue is when a video starts, there is a small Audio pop. I’ve never noticed that on other devices. 

I’m still playing with the setup, but for now I have the Shield plugged into my AV receiver and the receiver into the 4kTV. I’m going to try it directly plugging the Shield into the UHD TV and see if that changes anything. My current video setting are as below:

1080p 59.940 Hz (recommended)
4K      30Hz
4K      23.976 Hz
1080p 60 Hz
1080p 50 Hz

I have tried 1080 59.940 Hz and 4k 30Hz.  Both work.  I know that Mythtv doesn’t support 4k yet and the OTA TV isn’t 4k, but the Prime Video does have 4k content.

I also setup my Harmony Smart Control Hub using the Windows Keyboard (virtual) method that has been discussed in my other Shield thread. 

So I have a solution I can live with happily and pull the plug on my NUC, FireTV and RP3 B+ with LibreELEC (Kodi).
