I did not get this error when I installed. I only had issues with 
raspbian stretch 2018-11-13 loosing the lxpanel sometimes on boot.  So I 
installed raspbian lite latest version then installed xfce per 
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=133691

I follows the 2 wiki's you referenced for v29. But really it was simple 
changes, like gpu memory 256, putting in the .asoundrc file for digital 
audio. I also bought the mpg2 license.
