What I read - and do - is that in order to use VAAPI the painter engine 
has to be OpenGL, which is probably why your "auto" setting works.  
VAAPI works perfect on my NUCs, as long as the engine is OpenGL.

I can't get VDPAU to work on them - but then again I'm still on 28-fixes.
