Okay, I must have missed the announcement. If memory serves, you used to have the use painter set to Qt. Which is what installation set and what I had when VAAPI didn’t work. I ran from console and saw an error about can’t run opengl with qt. So I went to Setup > Appearance > paint engine and changed it from qt to auto and now VAAPI works. As well VDPAU, OpenGL High Quality. They all seem to work the same.

Thanks for the confirmation that VAAPI should work on an Intel GFX. :-)

The is related to Kodi 18rc. There are a bunch of setting to get the video to be as smooth as it use to be on 17.6. Back then mythfrontend and Kodi had equal quality on my Core i3 Ivy Bridge NUC. In making Kodi 18rc work right I got both equal again, but not sure what changed on the mythfrontend side since have not modified any myth settings.
