Be aware that I have a bug in 16.04 where alsa randomly gets the SPDIF
output muted - it happens to me once or twice a day, sometimes in the
middle of watching a programme. I have never bothered to track down
where the problem is, but I do have to do an "alsactl restore" command
to restore my alsamixer settings. And occasionally the stored
settings are wrong and I need to use alsamixer again then do "alsactl
store" to save them. I have no idea if that is the same thing that
happened to you or if you simply never had the alsa settings right in
the first place.
