It depends. If/when moving from the ancient 0.9.0 lirc version the info 
in that doc is more or less obsolete - the configuration has changed 
quite a lot in modern lirc. Notably, there is no hardware.conf these days.

Also, there is the kernel support for the MCE remotes which should be 
considered.
