i've not had issues with my 2-3year old 2820 NUC. Change the decoder to VAAPI in the playback settings and thats all i've done.
the latest NUCs (even the celeron model) seem to have 4k support.
i used to use nvidia/VDPAU hardware but have had no issues with the VAAPI, or OpenMAX (raspberrypi's) hw decoders to favour one over the other.
