If the GPU has a fan, then it is always a good idea to clean it before
trying to find any other source of the problem. And then check that
it is turning well when power comes on. Old fans also probably are in
need of some oil. Frequently it is possible to take the sticky label
off the centre of the fan and you find the bearings and/or shaft
exposed underneath, or under a cap that can also be pulled off. Add a
drop of light machine oil (eg sewing machine oil) and put the label
back on. Do not use vegetable based oil like 3-in-1 as it tends to
gum up with age. Also clean the heatsink.

Even if your GPU temperature sensor is reading an OK value, there can
be spot heating in other parts of the GPU silicon that is going above
safe levels. It just depends on where the airflow is still getting
to, or not getting to. All heatsinks and fans need at least annual
cleaning, and more often in hotter or dirtier climates.
