Sure enough, by playing a bit of musical usb ports, I was able to cause
the system to reboot/power-cycle with both tuners fully initialized and
even in conformance with my udev rules (well, ok, I had to revise the alsa
udev rules a bit). I'm reluctant to describe what worked since I don't
really understand why it did; it will be unlikely to work in the way
described on a different system and I'm also not certain it will continue
to work here--though it has so far through 2 power cycles. What will
happen if/when I will compile a new kernel, for example? I guess we'll
have to see, should that eventuality transpire.
Anyway, I plugged the behaving HVR-950q into the port where the flirc
formerly was inserted (directly into the Liva). I left the miscreant
HVR-950q plugged into the external USB hub, though in a different port on
that hub. On booting the computer, everything came up just as I'd been
expecting, with no need for any unplugging/replugging of usb capture
cards to get both operational and recognized by myth.
I thought enumerating and naming of usb devices might have become more
coherent at this stage in the 21st century, but I guess it hasn't. Go
figure. Back to boning up on slot-conflict resolutions for me.
