Yes, I did build the kernel. And, no, though I do have CONFIG_SND_USB=y, 
CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO is not set. So that may well be at the root of this 
analog audio problem. Thanks for providing that tip, Devin.

It looks like I may be in for a kernel recompile, before which I'll need 
to deal with yet another slot conflict that's interfering with a system 
update. Unless I can somehow just compile the snd-usb-audio module 
separately or maybe, after having revised my kernel config, just do a make 
modules install. I don't have enough experience with kernel compiling to 
know whether those are viable options. But anyway it does look like a 
resolution is in sight, one way or the other.

I will report back with that information if the kernel or kernel module(s) 
recompile does not resolve the issue.
