  Just a note, I do use that keytable method with more than one progran - I put 
a menu option in mythtv to launch kodi.

  This did require that the codes in ir keytable be somewhat sane (eg, the arrow 
keys on the remove correspond to KEY_UP, KEY_RIGHT, etc).  And a few other 
common ones.

  I think the ones I bound were more the obscure/myth specific ones.  Like 
commercial skip.  Also, because I use 1 frontend on 2 different TVs, I have 
global events defined in mythtv that are keyed to other unique keypresses - the 
global event switches the myth profile it uses as well as the screen resolution.
Clearly, those keypresses need to be very unique and not something produced by 
other keys.

  Not saying this solution will work for everyone, but it does a pretty good job 
for me.
