Group rights other then through the primary group of the user do not
propagate through nfs. So if the files are not owned by your backend
user or your backend users primary group...

Just adding the backend user to the group owning the files won't work.
You have to make the group owning the files the primary group of your
backend user or (inadvisable) make them world accessible.
