Open the door and put him in. Don't try to make it complicated.

Likewise this saga:
Install mythtv on your frontend.
Ensure you have the Qt-mysql drivers (how you do that depends on your 
distro)
If your frontend-install wants dependencies eg mariadb then install 
them. You don't care and won't use them, but what the heck.

Bingo, it works!

PS you *can* remove the unneeded dependencies with rpm 'breaking' the 
packages, but this leads to complications eg on upgrades. Again why bother.
