"the compact PC starts at $699".  Ouch!  But also way overkill.

With the right content[1] and the right GPU, an Atom does just fine.
 Bought my last two IONs for about $100-120 IIRC.

[1] Transcoding off-line for non-realtime content is cheap and easy
even on relatively lowly processors.  If you are only recording a few
hours of content in a day, who cares if an hour of content takes even a
few hours of transcoding time?  Even at 4:1, that's 6 shows per 24h.
 You might even save some space depending on what format you are
receiving your content in.  That all said, the amount of content my ION
wouldn't play has been near-none.  Only some newer h.265 has caused it
problems, so transcoding the one or two those I got my hands on (at a
space cost of course) was never a problem.
