I think that you missed the key point from the first blog post link:

"Atlas access is provided initially free of charge on a trial basis for up
to ten users, so that we can support early development of apps. Beyond 10
users on a single API key, or for trials continuing longer than three
months, a charge is levied based on the number of users you have, and the
features you use."

i.e. this looks like they are only providing Atlas data free of charge for
up to three months on a single API key - if you want to consume their data
on a regular basis, you are going to have to pay for it.

They go on to say that they want users to sign in to their account, in
order to:

"reconfirm their compliance with our terms and conditions, and provide
further details about their application, so that we can assess whether to
provide a time-limited free trial"

They say:

"We understand these arrangements will not suit everyone, especially those
users who are running software for personal use, who will want to maintain
access permanently without paying for using Atlas."

So the BBC are withdrawing their data on 16th June and now Atlas are
cutting off their data too!
