Like Peter, I use these receivers and don't use lirc. In fact, I wrote the wiki article:

which is mentioned in:

as an alternative to using the receiver without lirc.

Back then, I found using a receiver that looked like a keyboard to the kernel worked better (faster, more responsive and accurate) than using a receiver that required lirc (think Hauppauge PVR-150).
