Thank you guys for sharing your setup and the results of your video/audio tests. I pretty much have the same results.
Regarding the bcm2835.conf solution, it works pretty well for me too, thank you for finding this! I tried it on the package I compiled from fixes/0.28 and I think I am also getting some hiccups (but I am not sure if it comes from the audio passthrough or if it is from my setup [my test setup is not ideal right now]). Also, I need to try with the MythTV light package [the playback slightly better and I don't get the rare pixellisation with it, so it is possible that there will be less hiccups with passthrough enabled, but just a guess].
I am on a Raspberry Pi 3 and following Peter's advice I saw on another thread, I set the video memory to 128MB and it plays really nice [I don't see any improvement going to 256MB]! redgerhoo, you may want to try 128MB, but I didn't test on a RPi 2 with this setting.
I did not experience the volume changes though. I will need to test more than I just did to be sure that I don't see this issue. [maybe the RPi 3 doesn't show this issue]
Anyway, I will play a bit more with settings and setup a better test (well, production soon) environment!
Thank you sooo much for all the findings!
Teddy
PS: I am a mailing list noob and somehow I am not getting the emails you sent, redgerhoo. Not sure if it comes from my Yahoo! webmail that somehow discard the messages. [I saw the messages on lists.mythtv.org]
