For those in jurisdictions that respect IP, and
for those that respect the laws of their jurisdiction,
HDCP is the common technical implementation
that prohibits going down that path.  That is why
the analogue "hole" is typically utilized in those
jurisdictions (and why such devices usually have
component inputs).

And at (something near) $1000/unit, it is not
likely to be of interest to many, and if there
were many willing to commit to that level, they
could have funded the professional work that
would have resulted from the KernelLabs feeler
from some time ago for HDPVR2 integration.
So, while there will always be a place for such
solutions, I do not think it is a great hammer
for this particular nail.  But there is certainly
nothing to prevent someone so motivated from
going down the path if they choose.
