For the placement of the menu etc., I suggest using the frontend setup
appearance menu. You can enter pixel values for the top, left, height
and width. I find trial and error is the best way to get the values right.

ATSC (i.e. USA) subtitles do not currently work on raspberry pi. That is
on my todo list (low priority because I still have to figure it out).
Subtitles for videos (e.g. Mkv) do work.
