Hi Rob,
Let me take a quick minute to clarify your confusion.
The HVR-1950 is the original product, which has been on the market for
more than five years. It contains a US-only digital demodulator (the
European equivalent is the HVR-1900).
The HVR-1955 is the replacement for the HVR-1950. It contains a new
US-only digital demodulator and tuner, since the chips in the original
went end-of-life some time ago.
The HVR-1975 is a new variation of the core hardware design that
contains both a US digital demod as well as a DVB demod suitable for
many other areas of the world. From a feature standpoint you can look
at it as a single product which is a combination of the original
HVR-1950 and 1900. It's mainly targeted at commercial parties looking
to embed the tuner in their product and don't want to have separate
SKUs for US versus Europe (at a slightly higher cost since it contains
two demodulators).
Now where things get confusing is that Hauppauge may at it's
discretion choose to ship you a "better" product than the one you
ordered, assuming it has all the features you paid for. Hence you
might order a 1950 and get a 1955 (in this case it's reflected in the
model number). Or you might order a 1955 and get a 1975 (repackaged
as a 1955). They're obviously only thinking of Windows and hence
don't consider that under Linux you can end up getting unsupported
hardware in terms of Linux driver support.
Hopefully that makes things a little more clear in terms of the
various products out there and their relationship to each other.
