I actually thought the opposite. Given that MythTV is used in many countries with different languages the introduction of the recgroups table and a recgroupid would seem to me to allow the code to be written without assuming a particular user language. So terms like Default, LiveTV and Deleted can be translated more easily as necessary without breaking any "magic strings".

Whether this was actually part of the dev motivation or not, i dont know.

Full disclosure - i've never put my install into a non english language so no idea whether translations for Default, LiveTV and Deleted are already handled in some other fashion.
