I don't know about your other questions, but the above is not the
reason. Original motivation was that the then-common ext3 filesystem had
very poor performance when deleting multi-gigabyte files. All I/O would
freeze for many seconds, including playback and recording, which would
lead to obvious problems.

This option is pretty much not needed with ext4 or xfs.
