TL;DR on the "FrontEnd will connect if it feels like it".

The thing to do here is try to connect to the database using mysql
command line

mysql -u mythtv -p9uKbDz3G -h serenity mythconverg

substitute your password after -p and server name instead of serenity.

You need to be able to connect from both backend and frontend machines.
