[mythtv-users] problems with livetv playback OS X Install

i salvaged my daughter's old 2.53mhz c2d macbook pro, running 10.9.5, and used 
craig's osx installer to build a new f/e box. it successfully talks to the b/e, 
gets the guide & recorded listings, and has no problem playing back recordings, 
but live tv just flashes the splash image & returns to the main menu:-\

where do i start troubleshooting that?
