How do most people control their cable boxes then? The blind nature of
an IR blaster seems a bit too unreliable to me. Or are cable boxes a
mostly dead concept as well? (Yes, I have a HD-PVR for the channels
that the HDHR won't record).

Yeah, I had tried that. And unfortunately the USB network adapter I
got <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BBD7NFU> worked abysmally at
USB 2.0 speeds. Using nttcp, the gigabit adapter connected via USB 2.0
would max out at around 20Mbit. After further testing with a VM in the
past, I concluded that if somebody both is using an updated driver *and*
has it plugged into a USB 3.0 port, it works quite well.
And alas, my system only has USB 2.0 built-in.

Yeah. The issue that I ran into was when there were multiple streams
being recorded, one being watched, and mythcommflag was flagging a
recording as well. While that's a somewhat rare occurrence, it seemed
to be a bit much for the 100Mb/sec connection, as the stream I was
watching would get choppy.
