"Mangled" and "stretched" from -what-, exactly?

Original film shot at 16:9.  Mastered to DVD at 16:9.  Sent
to AW-capable SDTV with AW bit set and all 16:9 data present.
Rendered on SDTV at 16:9.  If you think that this image is
"stretched" in some way, I don't understand why.
