Manual restart of mythbackend after booting doesn't fix the problem.
the netstat command returns this
tcp 0 0 localhost:mysql *:*
LISTEN 1051/mysqld

/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
The mysql log does appear to point to a password problem
