These types of direct connect IR to STB/STA cables were all the rage
for things like TiVo years ago.  Most require one or two low cost
components to provide the isolation and/or mediation between the
different voltages/signals.  You can still find them sold on various
e-tailer sites, and you can probably find some alternative designs

In any case, moving to direct IR cabling is one of the things one
does at the end.  One should start with just using an IR
emitter cable and taping it to the front of the DTA and get things
working.  Moving to direct connect cables is a bonus later to
make things more reliable.
