I thought that was going to be messy!

The offending file is "sudo gedit /etc/mysql/conf.d/mythtv-tweaks.cnf"

Once the table cache line is commented out, everything is fine again.

Whoever is in charge of the 'mythtv-tweaks.cnf' file (I think it may be 
a Mythbutu specific thing), please change the file! It may be the worse 
teak in the world ever. :-)
