Thanks to all who helped with this.

This morning I bought a 5GB USB3 drive from Amazon which several reviewers
commented spins up within just a few seconds (2-5).  So come Thursday
I can put the Toshiba back to it's intended purpose of holding Rsnapshot
incremental backups for our important data.  In that application the slow
spin ups don't matter.

Life is good.
