Further information:

I just installed Nvidia 340.96 driver via Settings>Additional Drivers, 
rebooted  and mythfrontend works correctly using Nvidia driver.    
Nvidia X-server settings shows GeForce 210

Nvidia 304.131 driver was also available for install but I have not 
tried this.
