An update.  Since around midday yesterday the KDE Plasma desktop in 
xenial has started for me and seems to be running well;  before that I 
was using xubuntu, not lubuntu as stated above.

The fonts puzzle is explained.  mythtv-common in xenial has 
fonts-droid-fallback but not fonts-droid, which is available for trusty.
