At least "some" of the (most interesting to many) 4K content
will (likely) come with copy protection (including HDCP 2.2)
requirements, of which open source projects need not apply.
At this point Comcast (for example) requires one to use their
app since the content is delivered over the Internet (not via the
classic linear programming platforms). With their soon to
be released Xi4/5 4K ready STBs, along with their Docsis 3.1
rollouts, there may be some options for Comcast for delivery
of the 4K content (not all options would be open source
tolerant).

Of course, there are many other potential sources for 4K
content than Comcast (but I am addressing the OPs
question).

So the best answer at this time for being "ready" is
likely the ill defined "maybe". As the delivery options
become clearer, the answer may come into focus.
