Guessing the necessary AAC codecs were not installed by default.

Installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage pulls in these and
many other patent-encumbered codecs required for an optimal multimedia
experience.

The additional packages/codecs/libraries installed via
ubuntu-restricted-extras can be seen (e.g. for Wily) here:
